Former Governor Jim Edgar Honored with New State Building Name

A recently renovated state building in Springfield has been named for former Illinois Governor Jim Edgar, honoring his decades of public service and commitment to the people of Illinois.

The former Illinois Armory was officially named the Jim Edgar Executive Office Building at the Illinois Armory during a ceremony at the Governor’s Mansion. The building is currently undergoing renovations and will eventually house state employees.

Edgar, who served as Illinois governor from 1991 to 1999, died in September 2025 at the age of 79. The new name provides a lasting tribute to his time in public service and his contributions to Illinois government.

The building is being renovated to provide additional space for state employees and is expected to become another active part of the Capitol complex once the work is complete.

Naming the building after Governor Edgar is a fitting way to recognize his years of service and ensure his legacy remains a part of the Capitol complex for future generations.
